Rangers nip Yanks with run in ninth
Baseball Betting Lines
07/02/2008 -
Bronx, NY (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Michael Young went 2-for-5 and drove in the go-
ahead run in the ninth inning, as the Texas Rangers edged the New York Yankees, 3-2, in the middle contest of a three-game set at Yankee Stadium.
Chris Davis was 1-for-3 with an RBI for the Rangers, who have won four of five
overall. Jarrod Saltalamacchia had the other RBI in the win.
Kevin Millwood lasted five innings and gave up a run on five hits, but did not
factor in the decision. Frank Francisco (2-2) was dealt the win as he threw a
perfect eighth and C.J. Wilson earned his 19th save of the season with a
scoreless ninth.
Robinson Cano was 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Yankees, who have dropped three
straight tilts. Wilson Betemit tied the game in the sixth with an RBI single
in a losing effort.
Joba Chamberlain was pulled in the fourth inning after control issues, having
allowed two runs on five hits, while fanning six and walking four. Mariano
Rivera (2-3) absorbed the loss as he gave up the game-winning run in the
ninth.
"I tried to be careful, I thought I made a good pitch," Rivera said. "I can't
take it back, even though that's what I want. It's part of the game."
Rivera took the hill for the Yankees in the ninth, but surrendered a leadoff
double to Ian Kinsler, who stole third base. Young followed with an RBI
single up the middle, and the Rangers pulled ahead 3-2.
"I thought I was going to foul a couple of balls off my shin," Kinsler said.
"He threw me two cutters and tried to throw a sinker in...the guy's great,
he's been great ever since he touched a baseball."
Wilson closed it out for Texas in the ninth, working around a walk to Betemit
on four pitches. Melky Cabrera grounded into a double play and Johnny Damon
grounded to first to make it official.
The Yankees were without the services of shortstop Derek Jeter, who was given
the night off.
The Rangers jumped on top, 2-0, in the second inning. Chamberlain walked
David Murphy and Marlon Byrd to start the frame before Davis belted an RBI
single just out of the reach of Cabrera in center field. Saltalamacchia kept
it going with another RBI single but an accurate throw from Cabrera nailed
Davis at third to end the frame.
The Yankees got on the board in the fourth inning. Jason Giambi worked a one-
out walk and Jorge Posada put runners on the corners with a single. Cano then
laced a single to right, plating Giambi and pulling New York to within one.
New York knotted the game in the sixth inning as Josh Rupe came on in relief
of Millwood. Posada started a two-out rally with a single through the right
side of the infield. Cano kept it going with a single and Betemit hit an RBI
single to left, and it was a 2-2 ballgame.
Game Notes
Kinsler increased his hitting streak to 14 games...The Rangers stole four
bases off Posada...Cabrera had an outfield assist...Chamberlain threw 91
pitches, only 49 for strikes.

With the field of 64/65 set, MySportsbook.com has the Florida Gators as the 4-1 favorite to successfully defend their National Championship. Men’s Division-1 College Basketball has not seen a team repeat as National Champions since Duke won back to back championships in ’91 & ‘92. After losing three out of four late in the season, the Gators are full of momentum as they won their last four games by an average of 18 points. Not surprisingly, right behind the Gators are the other three top seeds: Kansas 5-1, UNC 6-1, and Ohio State 7-1. Many consider Kansas to be the hottest team in the country, having won 11 straight. With Kansas, it is hard to ignore all of the early exits from the “dance” in recent years. With an impressive ACC Tournament, UNC ensured themselves the other top seed. UNC has about as much talent as any other team in the tournament but with a team that’s best players are primarily freshman and sophomores, could youth be a concern. Behind freshman sensation, Greg Oden, OSU will look to do what their football team failed to do just a few months earlier. OSU seems to have peeked at the right time, as they currently have a 17 game winning streak. Since the tournament field was expanded in 1985, there has never been an instance where all four #1 seeds advanced to the Final Four. It is obvious that each of the top seeds have the talent to make it through to Atlanta. But as everyone knows, when makes the NCAA Tournament so special are all of the spoilers and “Cinderella” stories that knock off the favorites on a daily basis.
